Learners can always refer to the lessons from training and documentation but generally we want them to find the answers using their experience at work. standards, scaling, validate, elevate the conversation
Workflow Learning boils down to the principle that in anything we do in learning design and content, we start with work.
We look at the work issues and situations because that is what matters to the workers and anything not useful to them at work will not sink into their minds.
The second main area is the experience of people because it is the fastest way to get answers from.
Learners can always refer to the lessons from training and documentation but generally we want them to find the answers using their experience at work.
The third main area is the experience rating. Experience may not at all times be efficient or sufficient. We must encourage our learners to think through and this is where we apply Scaling Capability.
We need them to scale their thinking beyond the procedures and standards only but also to handle the unknown, expect even the things that are exceptions.
We need to provide a structure to think through these problems and validate and elevate the conversation.
In Workflow Learning we start with work issues, then experience sharing, validate experience by thinking through and discover mature and more reliable outcomes. This process is in fact accessible to the learners on the job.
