Situation

The situation is where you start. You learn by dealing with real-life work situations. Provide a short description of the situation for the learners to work on. Along the way, you will impact results.
Sitches are situations, jams, issues, errors, gaps, troubles, stoppages and many others to fix and solve. They are also opportunities to improve, grow, expand, and introduce better, faster and cheaper ways to get the desired results.
What is your Situation and Question?
A fundamental requirement of work at Heritage Valley is that employees are fit for duty when they present themselves for work and that the workplace is free from the inappropriate use of alcohol and/or other drugs and/or otherwise unfit for duty based on demonstrated behavior(s). When an employee demonstrates inappropriate behavior or performance and/oror is involved in an incident that gives rise to concern about fitness for duty, Heritage Valley has a policy and process that is to be followed.
What's the biggest challenge?
Supervisors often do not recognize signs of impairment - especially those who do not have medical training and/or education. Supervisors lack in-depth education regarding the Heritage Valley Fitness for Duty policy and the process to be followed. The challenge is to raise awareness for all supervisors regarding workplace fitness for duty. Supervisors are inconsistent in their ability to identify behavior or performance that may indicate an employee is under the influence of alcohol or other drugs deeming them unfit for duty. It can be expected that Ssupervisors also vary in their ability or willingness to follow the required procedures when an employee is suspected of being impaired. Supervisors are often reluctant to address impairment issues - can be due to understaffed departments, reluctance to get a favored employee in trouble, low confidence in their ability to properly confront/handle impaired employees
What's the objective?
• Conduct supervisory training on what is workplace impairment • How to identify workplace impairment o What does is look like? o personality changes or erratic behavior (e.g. increased interpersonal conflicts; overreaction to criticism) o appearance of impairment at work (e.g., odor of alcohol or drugs, glassy or red eyes, unsteady gait, slurring, poor coordination) o working in an unsafe manner or involvement in an incident o Consistent lateness, absenteeism, or reduced productivity or quality of work • What to do if you suspect impairment
