    I do find that what we struggle with is capturing the informal learning that happens on the job in order to communicate out the solutions. In many cases, the workers actually feel dis-incentivized to share their knowledge.

    I think getting the quick answers is important but it's more important to post those somewhere and have people review to make sure the answer is optimal/approved/repeatable/etc. I think what happens now is people can get their answers quickly enough but then don't process them or publish and so it gets forgotten and becomes a question/answer thing again the next time and the next time.

      Sadly I have seen that happen a time or two. That is why during our new software rollout we actually have a training person assigned to the SCRUM and defect meetings so she feeds me the nice to know or ought to know information she picks up from the meeting and I can incorporate it right away into our online training modules; no waiting on an official memo to come out about it so we stay one step ahead on these things.

    Interestingly enough this has come up in our training last week. The comments from our team were we train them on the task and how to complete them. They don't have enough information to know how to respond to client changes. They don't know what path to follow when they need to respond or advise the client on system standards. The feedback we received was more discussion around the empowerment to make the judgement calls.

    I love all the comments shared. Conversations that occur naturally in the workflow are the best! When I have received a call or called someone, I always relished the opportunity to connect and partner to come up with solutions or next steps. Timing of conversations and frequency is very important! Conversing in the workflow is powerful. Conversations that focus on finger pointing or merely complaining hurt people and organizations.

    My team holds a twice-weekly FASTER meeting, where they share with me and the team what's finished in their workload and what impact it had on the business, they acknowledge someone, their still outstanding tasks, the biggest trouble spot they are facing, how they have been enlightened recently, and make any requests of the team. My team is part of a larger unit, and those I work with really appreciate our meetings. It allows for visibility, collaboration, and most importantly, a chance to actually talk without an email or Skype! I like to think they're learning from each other in these sessions, or at least all getting a little bit of practical advice from me.
